I am not native to Cleveland. I grew up in Rochester, New York and moved to West Palm Beach, Florida before my senior year of high school. I finished high school, attended undergrad and finished my first year of law school in Florida. My college sweetheart (now wife) is a Cleveland native. Once we were married, we decided to move to Cleveland, so I transferred to Case Western to finish law school. Cleveland has been my home for 5 years. I am a Cuyahoga County Board Member for American Cancer Society and am also actively involved with Christian Business Men Connection (CBMC). I enjoy traveling, sports, music, cooking and spending time with friends and family.
Why did you join Young Leaders?
I informed a mentor that I was interested in volunteering with an organization that would provide civic opportunities as well as excellent opportunities for professional development and networking. She recommended United Way and connected me with someone who, at the time, held a leadership position with United Way Young Leaders. That relationship paved the way for me to meet others involved with the organization and allowed me to be involved in the beginning stages of the Corporate Chapter program. I helped launch the Corporate Chapter at Hahn Loeser and have been actively involved ever since.
What is your favorite Young Leaders event and why?
My favorite Young Leaders event last year was Fall Ball. Hahn Loeser sponsored the event, which provided many of our young professionals with an opportunity to network with other professionals, while also having a great time and supporting a great cause. In that same vein, the Speaker Series and Networking Events hosted by Young Leaders also provide excellent opportunities to meet a wide array of like-minded professionals from both the private and public sectors.
What do members hope to get out of their involvement with Young Leaders?
My involvement with United Way Young Leaders provides me with the unique opportunity to meet like-minded young professionals and serve along-side them to improve the city of Cleveland and surrounding communities. My goal is to maximize this opportunity and get the most out of my involvement by increasing my professional, social, and civic engagement.
In your opinion, what makes Cleveland a good city for young professionals?
Cleveland provides the upside of a larger city, such as excellent amenities, but without the downside. For instance, Cleveland has an excellent food scene, world-class cultural institutions, multiple professional sports teams, a strong downtown professional base and an unbeatable cost of living. It is a city that has preserved and is proud of its history and culture. Cleveland is going through a renaissance after several tough decades. Living and working in a city on the rise provides unique prospects for opportunistic and ambitious young professionals.
