| The number of families and individuals in Cuyahoga County facing unemployment, financial problems, and difficulty securing adequate housing and food has increased significantly. In response, United Way has increased its investment in programs to make basic human needs -- food, housing and jobs leading to self-sufficiency -- more available to those in need. Your United Way knows that having a job is the key to self-sufficiency and funds services that address barriers to employment including job training and placement, adequate child care so that parents can work without worrying about their children, and specialized programs to help our disabled residents enjoy purposeful and meaningful lives.
We're helping our working poor achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable employment through job skills training, stay-in-school strategies for junior high and high school youths and child care services that promote child development. Additionally, we're helping people with disabilities obtain employment. We're working to prevent homelessness, providing basic needs such as food and shelter and helping people and families in need obtain stable or improved housing. We're implementing outreach strategies that will help people and households without adequate food participate in government food programs. We're helping people who were formerly incarcerated to successfully integrate back into their families and community by accessing services to help with affordable housing, education, employment and health benefits. And we're working to help families and individuals in financial distress through credit counseling and financial literacy education on payday lending, scams and high-risk mortgages. |
