Senior Success

INITIATIVE:
Benefits Enrollment and Access for Seniors
As our population ages, many older adults quietly struggle to make ends meet with small retirement incomes and growing medical expenses. Seniors have a significant unmet need for access to health and human service assistance in our community. For example, only 30 percent of eligible seniors receive food stamps. This initiative will create a more user-friendly system to help older adults access benefits to meet their basic financial and health needs, enabling them to move from poverty toward a livable income. The system will increase the number of eligible seniors enrolled in major benefits programs.

PROGRESS TO DATE:

Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging became the lead agency for this initiative in 2008. United Way's 211/First Call For Help is also helping to develop this community-wide network of benefits access for seniors.
