Alexander "Sandy" Cutler is the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Congratulations to Alexander M. Cutler, chairman and chief executive officer of Eaton Corporation, who was named the 2009 Volunteer of the Year at the United Way Annual Meeting on March 5, 2010. This award is presented each year to an outstanding volunteer whose long-term commitment to United Way is a legacy of caring for our community. "When I think about this year's recipient, I think of someone who always gives his 'all' to every project. He is a visionary and expects to exceed expectations, which he does," said Sandra Pianalto, United Way of Greater Cleveland Board Chairman and Federal Reserve Bank President and CEO, when she announced Cutler as the Volunteer of the Year. Cutler served as United Way's Chairman of the Board from 2004-2006, during which time he focused on enhancing the organization's efficiency, effectiveness and governance. Under his leadership United Way made many important improvements in these areas, including beginning a multi-year funding process for community partners, implementing program outcome measurements and initiating the Core Services Planning process. Cutler assumed his position as United Way's chairman immediately following his term as United Way's 2003 Campaign Chair. Other United Way activities include board membership for more than ten years, service on the Campaign Cabinet responsible for fundraising in several market segments and participation on the Strategic Planning Committee. Cutler also currently serves as a co-chair of the Philanthropist Society. Since 2000, Mr. Cutler has been chairman and chief executive officer of Eaton Corporation, a $15.4 billion global diversified power management company. Cutler assumed his current position in August 2000, after serving as Eaton’s president and chief operating officer since 1995. Mr. Cutler has been with Eaton since 1979. He has a bachelor's degree from Yale and a master's degree in business administration from Dartmouth College. Mr. Cutler serves on many civic and community boards and has taken an active role in promoting philanthropy both in the Greater Cleveland community and at Eaton, where he actively encourages employees' efforts to make a meaningful, positive difference in the communities where they live and work.
