About Carmen
I currently serve as the Industry Segment Leader for Oswald Companies’ Professional Service and Health & Human Service divisions, specializing in malpractice insurance for attorneys, accountants and other similar organizations. In addition to my participation with Oswald Companies and the United Way Young Leaders team, I enjoy spending time with my girls (my wife Megan, and our beautiful daughters Abby Grace and Reese), I enjoy exercising, golfing (very poorly), doing anything in the outdoors, and traveling (most often to the Carolinas).
Carmen’s thoughts on what Cleveland offers young professionals
As a lifelong Clevelander, I have seen firsthand the extensive professional and personal opportunities that the city offers. From its extensive legal community, to its world-renowned healthcare facilities, to its diverse cultural centers (University Circle, Playhouse Square, etc.), the city has become a destination spot for emerging professionals and their families. And while the professional opportunities are abundant, the cost of living remains one of the most competitive nationwide. It is a fantastic place to establish roots and raise a family.
Why he joined Young Leaders
I was introduced to United Way by Oswald Companies’ CEO, Marc Byrnes, after I joined Oswald Companies in 2005. After serving as our internal “workplace champion” for approximately two years, I was fortunate enough to receive an invite to join the Young Leaders Cabinet. In years past, I also assisted in the campaign efforts of the Western Region Campaign Committee for United Way.
Carmen’s favorite Young Leaders event
Fortunately, Oswald Companies has a longstanding commitment to United Way, and is incredibly supportive of our involvement with the Young Leaders group. This level of support has enabled us to host an annual Oswald Companies / Young Leaders Day of Caring. We have held this event each of the past several years now at various United Way agencies, and it is so rewarding to see the young professionals from our office roll up their sleeves to volunteer on behalf of United Way. Words can’t describe how exciting it is to watch each person realize firsthand that his/her individual contribution is actually making a difference in our community, and to begin to recognize the number of lives touched by United Way in our everyday lives.

Over the course of my career I have had project leader positions in IT and pricing, and have been engaged in various volunteer and employee engagement leadership roles. I have been involved in numerous volunteer activities and a supporter of United Way since joining GE Lighting in 2002. In my off time I enjoy trying to tire out my adopted dog Colt, playing volleyball and traveling.
What Andrea feels members hope to get out of their involvement with Young Leaders
I think most members look to get networking opportunities out of Young Leaders while having the chance to do something great for the community. Our networking participation has been tremendous this year and I think everyone is starting to see the continued benefits in participating in these events for both their career and United Way.
Why she joined Young Leaders
It started off as a recommendation from our CEO at the time; he wanted me to learn more about the organization for our young professional population. I went to a few events, and met some great people who also support the United Way’s mission of helping so many individuals and families in the Greater Cleveland area. Our Young Leaders base and network continues to grow and I’m proud to be part of this growth and transformation – it will only continue to benefit those in need in our community!
Andrea’s favorite Young Leaders event
After my first experience with the Hay Maze at Hiram House, I might have to say that one. I organize events all the time and it was fun to just volunteer and enjoy a fall afternoon while spending time with other Young Leaders as we prepared the maze for the thousands of children and families that will be visiting Hiram House for Halloween.
