America Saves Week

Dan Hinman

At the start of every year many of us make resolutions attempting to be idealized versions of ourselves. While some efforts may fail, each one highlights the optimism and hope we have to be our best self, and often the difference between success and slipping back to old habits is a helpful nudge to keep us on track.

If your goal, like mine, is to save more money this year there are a few things in your favor at the beginning of the year. First, it’s tax time! For many, a refund can be the largest single check of the year, and it’s a great time to put some money away for a rainy day (check our blog on free tax prep programs).

Also, February 22-27 is America Saves Week, a week dedicated to promoting good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status. Cleveland Saves, a project run by Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland, helps people set and achieve their savings goal. Starting with a simple pledge you make to yourself, Cleveland Saves reminds you of your goal and sends tips and advice through email or text messages. This keeps your target fresh in your mind and increases your likelihood of reaching your goals.

After a 100+ year-old drain pipe sprung a leak in my home, I had to cut access holes in the floor and ceiling. PVC doesn’t cost much and my father-in-law helped me, but repairing the floor and ceiling will be expensive. I started my Cleveland Saves pledge by putting in how much we can manage to set aside each month and when we’d like to have the repairs finished. The pledge showed us when we would likely have the money to make the repairs.

In addition to my pledge, now I get reminder texts sent to my phone and tips to help save money in other areas. One of the most powerful parts of the Cleveland Saves project is it shows how a little bit each month can achieve a repair I didn’t think I could afford.AmericaSaves-MediumRectangle-300x250-static-automaticdeposits

We all have different needs for the different situations we find ourselves in, so ask yourself a few questions and then head over to the Cleveland Saves website.

  • What do you want to save for?
  • When do you want to have it saved by?
  • What type of reminders and tips would help you the most?

We all need a bit of help to reach our goals. Let’s help each other and lend support when someone else needs it and together let’s make 2016 the year we started reaching our savings goals. Use the comment section to let us know what you are saving for and share tips you’ve found successful.
