It’s the hashtag used on social networks to share random acts of kindness and selfless contributions. #Unselfie is also the motivation for #GivingTuesday. Oh, you haven’t heard? Just as Black Friday is the kickoff for holiday shopping, #GivingTuesday launches the season of giving. It was started in 2012 and for the second year in a row, United Way of Greater Cleveland will join with thousands of other communities around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
#GivingTuesday encourages personal philanthropy. It’s easy, leverages mobile technology and social media, and you can do it your own way. #GivingTuesday is about lending your voice or giving to a cause or issue you care passionately about. Simply search the hashtag; you’ll find millions of tweets, status updates and Instagram photos proving the magnitude and power of this movement. Here at United Way we are accepting donations to help our neighbors who are struggling to meet their basic needs. Visit www.GivingTuesdayCLE.org to make a donation now.
I spent several years volunteering at homeless shelters and transitional living facilities. Countless stories of men, women, children and families faced with instability – spending multiple nights on the couch of friends and loved ones, eventually finding their way to a shelter. Mothers unable to fully provide their children everything they need. Imagine the feeling of your baby needing diapers and not being able to afford them. No mom, parent or caregiver should have to experience this.
But we do not have to look at shelters in our communities to see human need. Calls coming into our United Way 2-1-1 hotline tell us daily that individuals and families throughout Cuyahoga County, in central city communities and our suburbs, are visiting food pantries to help make ends meet. With the cold season upon us many families are making even tougher choices about basic needs like food, clothing and heat for their homes – basic needs for some that are not so basic for others. This #GivingTuesday, #GiveTheBasics.
We’ve made it easy for you! No need to go out and purchase toothpaste, shampoo, lotions or diapers. Simply make a donation at www.GivingTuesdayCLE.org.
What you could buy retail with $10 can be multiplied into 12 bottles of shampoo. A $25 gift can provide four moms each with a 48- count pack of diapers or $50 has the buying power for 192 rolls of bath tissue.
Make a donation. Spread the word. Help your neighbors in need on #GivingTuesday.
