When you learn, teach, when you get, give.

Jason Daniels“When you learn, teach, when you get, give.” These are the famous words of educator, actress, singer, civil rights activist and one of the most renowned African American poets of our time, Dr. Maya Angelou. Called upon by many to perform her famous poems, she was a constant teacher herself. Dr. Angelou consistently urged her audience to give their very best for the betterment of humankind.

When my friends and colleagues ask me what I like most about the people of this city my answer is immediate – Clevelanders are smart! I have learned when smart people gather to solve tough problems success is imminent. But solving tough problems and combating the issues of society does not have to be rocket science. Some issues get solved when we simply give what we have.

Throughout Cleveland children and adults are hungry; literacy for kids and parents is an obstacle; moms, dads and caregivers cannot make ends meet. These and many other issues are no longer occurring in traditional isolated pockets of our community but at alarming rates in our suburbs according to calls we receive at United Way 2-1-1, our 24-hour hotline where people call to get help. United Way of Greater Cleveland is looking to engage you in our work to help advance our work in education, income and health. We all want a safe community where individuals and families are thriving.

Today, I would ask you to explore where you have the capacity to give more, give better. Where can you make the time and commitment to help change the trajectory of a person’s life? Let your United Way help you help someone get one step closer to achieving their individual success. Our issues did not occur in one day so in equal measure we should commit to ending long term issues with long term commitments.

Take a moment to complete our interest form. We’ll keep you updated on our work and let you know when opportunities arise for you to get involved.

Dr. Angelou also said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
