Welcome to our 2017 community assessment information page

On Thursday, July 20, 2017 United Way of Greater Cleveland held a community forum at the City Club of Cleveland to announce the release of a Community Assessment report.

A Community Assessment is the process by which an organization examines issues, opportunities and trends in the community it serves. Components of an assessment include: focus groups, interviews, surveys and multiple forms of data. The results then help the organization understand its community’s needs and provides the information necessary to make informed, strategic decisions.

United Way of Greater Cleveland’s Community Assessment

In June 2016, United Way of Greater Cleveland’s Community Impact Department began this process. This year long practice, undertaken about every three years, is vital for the department’s decision-making, as Community Impact is the department investing dollars into the community.  This information, gathered through the Community Assessment, helps guide the responsible investment of donor dollars.

The information was gathered through a multi-pronged approach engaging over 1,500 donors, service providers, and community leaders. In addition, United Way of Greater Cleveland contracted with The Center for Community Solutions (Community Solutions) and worked with the Poverty Center at Case Western Reserve University gathering data to enrich the process. Community Solutions also facilitated two surveys on behalf of United Way.

“We cannot allocate funds properly if we do not fully, and in detail, understand the needs of our community,” stated Helen Forbes Fields. “The community assessment has been a nearly year-long endeavor, using the experience of residents and agencies across Cuyahoga County to identify key issues and trends in the communities we serve.”

After all of the information was gathered and reviewed, trends and recommendations naturally emerged from the community’s input. In the end, Community Impact developed a cohesive report and the information it contains is being provided back to the public. The aim of this publication is to begin a larger conversation about community needs and, most importantly, how best to take action.
