Heroes Unite event brings together thousands to celebrate giving back
United Way of Greater Cleveland took over Public Square on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 for its first ever community celebration! The event was held to thank donors, volunteers, organizations and the public for their support and love for the city and its people.
More than 400 people gathered on the Square from 4-8 p.m. to unite and experience everything superhero and fun – from superhero virtual reality simulators and live graffiti artists to the intense beats of rap artist and classical violinist Humble G tha Fiddla. The event culminated with blues-rock band and native Clevelanders Welshly Arms taking the stage.
The event also provided an opportunity to announce the 2017-18 annual campaign fundraising amount. August Napoli, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Cleveland, kicked off the remarks by thanking the crowd for attending and supporting the critical and far-reaching cause of battling poverty throughout our region.
“You give us the confidence to get up each day and fight to help those in greatest need. This celebration is a reminder that together we can change lives for the better!”
– August Napoli, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Cleveland
Napoli then introduced Chris Kelly, United Way campaign co-chair and managing partner at Jones Day, who shared his thoughts about poverty in our area. Beth Mooney, campaign co-chair and chair and CEO of KeyCorp, had the honor of sharing with the crowd that more than $45 million was successfully raised to help attack poverty throughout Greater Cleveland through a solutions-focused approach. She also thanked the thousands of individual donors, volunteers and organizational partners that showed the compassion and support needed to attain these results.
It was also an opportunity to make a statement; a statement that everyone is a hero in some way, shape or form. And when we unite, we can be a more powerful force in combating the effects of poverty in our region, creating a better place to live, work and play.
