Heroes in the CLE shines the spotlight on community superheroes

Moving away from its traditional pancake breakfast event, this year’s United Way of Greater Cleveland campaign kickoff celebrated the superheroes of our community – people who give their time, talents and treasure to those in critical need throughout Greater Cleveland and the region.

“Heroes in the CLE” marked the start of the organization’s 2017-18 annual appeal and celebrated the donors, volunteers and organizations who are working along with United Way to reduce poverty, provide for people’s basic needs and improve education, financial stability and health throughout Cuyahoga County.

“This year we’re taking a more progressive approach to kicking off our campaign,” said United Way of Greater Cleveland president and CEO Augie Napoli. “As someone who holds Cleveland near and dear to my heart, I wanted to help showcase our great city while focusing on two key groups – the people we serve and the donors and organizations who make it possible to do so.”

Marc Byrnes, chairman of Oswald Companies and United Way’s chairman of the board, urged those in attendance to “nurture those in need, protect them, help them grow as individuals and families.” United Way campaign co-chairs Beth Mooney, chair and CEO of KeyCorp, and Chris Kelly, partner with Jones Day, thanked those in attendance and the thousands who support United Way every day, reminding them that we must look at this year’s campaign with a dedication to uplifting those in poverty.

Kelly closed the remarks by stating, “… we think it’s our elected leaders and others who are the heroes … but it’s really all of you who are the heroes. You are the ones who selflessly do for others and make this city a great place and one we should all be proud to call home.”

Heroes in the CLE: United Way Campaign Kickoff, was hosted by KeyBank and presented by Oswald Companies, Thursday, August 31st, on Mall B in Downtown Cleveland.
