CLEVELAND (November 11, 2014)  In its first year United Way 2-1-1’s Help 2 Veterans Line answered more than 10,500 calls for help from veterans in Cuyahoga County. The free and confidential 24/7 information and referral line was launched last Veterans Day in partnership with Cuyahoga County.

“The Help 2 Veterans line is an important part of our commitment to serve veterans,” said United Way President and CEO Bill Kitson. “And because firsthand knowledge of the rigors of military life sometimes eases the conversation, we have veterans answering veteran calls to 2-1-1.”

Tim Grealis, an Air Force veteran and Help 2 Veterans specialist, answers calls daily from his peers seeking information on social, health and government resources.

“Our top calls are for immediate food and housing needs,” said Grealis. “But we also advocate for vets and pair them with education, income and health organizations to help them get back on their feet.”

The free and confidential helpline is available 24/7 to veterans, active duty military, reservists, national guards and their families. When they dial 2-1-1, they are connected to information and referral specialists specifically trained to assist them in locating and accessing social, health and government resources throughout Cuyahoga County, such as:

  • Employment services
  • Food, housing and utility assistance
  • Counseling services
  • Family support programs
  • Legal services
  • Tax preparation assistance
  • Volunteer opportunities

United Way 2-1-1 is a 24/7 free and confidential information and referral helpline serving Cuyahoga, Allen, Ashland, Belmont, Crawford, Geauga, Holmes, Huron, Lawrence, Marion, Medina, Portage, Van Wert, Wayne and Wyandot counties. For assistance, call 2-1-1 or visit www.211oh.org.
