Greater Cleveland Philanthropist Society

Live your legacy

The United Way of Greater Cleveland Philanthropist Society is a powerful force in creating a better community. Affiliated with the national Tocqueville Society, the Philanthropist Society operates under its own charge, appealing to the abilities and influence of its generous membership. Members are confident when making their annual gifts of $10,000 or more because they know United Way is the one place they can feel assured their charitable investment is providing the best return.

In some families, being a United Way Philanthropist Society donor is a tradition. Lois Horvitz, who recently passed away, and her son, Michael J. Horvitz, are both long-time United Way donors and current Philanthropist Society members. Michael, a retired Cleveland attorney, has been a United Way donor his entire 40-year career. He has been a long-time volunteer and co-chair of his company’s campaigns.

“I am a believer in supporting social services, but there are so many,” Michael said. “It is hard to evaluate them; I am not an expert on where the greatest needs are. United Way, however, is efficient in evaluating the many social service organizations and carefully weighs priorities.”

Michael’s mother, Lois, resides in California and supports several local charities but continues to make her major gift to United Way of Greater Cleveland. “There are so many entities it helps,” Lois said. “United Way is run so well, and I still feel Cleveland is my home.” Lois said she and Michael’s father emphasized charity while raising him.“It really means something to us,” Lois said. “Michael saw us giving and therefore fell into it.” Michael agreed. “It’s a fundamental principle; you help people who are less fortunate than yourself,” he said.

Our condolences to the Horvitz family on the recent passing of long-time United Way supporter Lois Horvitz.
