United Way Helps Provide Financial Stability

img_ow_ss_keepit “I didn’t need a handout, I needed a helping hand,” says Sharon Abrams. Faced with losing her home of 18 years to foreclosure, Sharon got just what she needed in the form of legal representation from the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s legal services to ensure income and economic stability program, which is funded by United Way of Greater Cleveland.

The program provides legal support to those facing situations like eviction, foreclosure and denial of social security benefits. In Sharon’s case, health problems and a job layoff combined to make it impossible for her to keep up with monthly mortgage and home equity line payments.

Legal Aid Society attorney Katherine Hollingsworth helped Sharon secure funds from Save the Dream Ohio to pay off her home equity loan, then worked through the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Mediation Program to reduce her mortgage payment to better fit within her fixed monthly income. Sharon is now one month ahead on her mortgage payments and able to pay her other monthly expenses.

You can help others just like Sharon. Please give today.
