Education

The path to the middle class starts at the schoolhouse door, but 42% of Cuyahoga County children lack the basic skills to be successful in kindergarten.

United Way believes no child should be left behind when they're just starting out.

Workforce Development

Limited job opportunities means thousands of Greater Clevelanders are either working as long as they can for financial reasons or would like to retire but cannot afford to stop working.

United Way believes living-wage jobs shouldn't be out of reach for anyone and seeks to ensure youth and adults are connected to jobs with career pathways.

Our ability to lead healthy lives is determined not only by our access to quality health care, but also fresh affordable food, positive interactions with friends and neighbors, stable housing free of pests and mold, and more. Asking families to choose between these needs can lead to new or worsening health problems, increased medical costs and time away from work or worse, loss of employment or housing.

United Way believes that the cure for the vicious generational cycle of poverty and its effects on the health of our city and our community is Health Pathways, United Way’s services, outreach activities and programs that target both the medical and social determinants of health.

Housing is a human right. When individuals and families experience homelessness, it should be brief and nonrecurring. United Way seeks to ensure Greater Clevelander’s have – or are on a pathway to – safe, stable, and healthy housing and are able to access resources to meet their basic needs.

United Way believes that by investing in services that promote healthy housing stability, we can reduce and prevent individuals and families experiencing the devastating effects of homelessness.
