Creating Dr. King’s “Beloved Community”

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to creating the Beloved Community.

“Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger, and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry, and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.” (The King Center)

At United Way of Greater Cleveland, we do our work each and every day in service of this vision. We use our platforms – particularly our voice, community investments, and partnerships –  to co-create solutions that remove unjust systemic barriers and advance economic equity and social justice. We celebrate our community’s diversity, work to ensure inclusive and equitable opportunities for all, and strive to create a sense of belonging for everyone.

In celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy, here are reflections from our team members on their dreams for our community. I am so grateful for the focused and relentless efforts of our passionate team, dedicated board, generous donors, determined partners, and so many others that are uniting forces to build the Beloved Community. My greatest hope is that together we can make his vision our reality.
