United Way of Greater Cleveland donors match landmark $10 million grant

United Way of Greater Cleveland reached a philanthropic milestone this year with more than 20 donors matching the transformational $10 million grant we received in 2022 from the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation. This allowed us to establish the $20 million endowed Cleveland Community Fund, which ensures that we will continue our work throughout Greater Cleveland for generations to come.

Foundations and Government Support

Our foundation relations team raised $2.9 million this past fiscal year, $1 million over its goal, in part due to its work in securing government funding for critical community resources like United Way 211.

The team rose to the challenge of increasing foundation awards by achieving an increase of 5 percent or more in grants from 22 percent of the foundations supporting our work.

To continue our work to remove barriers so that we all succeed, the foundation relations team enhanced its grant writing efforts to focus even deeper on proposals, reports, prospect research, and fundraising strategies.

“United Way is an organization offering a terrific return on investment. Cleveland has thousands of charitable organizations and if one catches your heart, that’s the one for you. But if you have a willingness to make a difference and ability to do so, I don’t think you can do better than United Way. They make the most of your contribution in a way that thoughtfully invests in breaking the cycle of poverty.”

Emerging Leaders

United Way of Greater Cleveland’s affinity group for young professionals continued its rapid growth this past year.

In addition to increasing fundraising efforts by 54 percent, the group hosted new events to facilitate engagement and experienced an attendance increase of nearly 60 percent. The group’s signature event, Fore CLE, raised almost $26,000 to support United Way 211.

Emerging Leaders’ events and activities are led by an advisory board called the Cabinet, comprised of 22 young professionals representing 18 companies in our region. They do an outstanding job of facilitating fundraising, networking, professional development, and connection to United Way amongst Cleveland’s next generation of leaders.
