How the Aging and Disability Resource Center supports Geauga County residents

United Way of Geauga County’s Aging and Disability Resource Center provides essential services to older adults and those living with disabilities, enabling them to live independently and improving overall community well-being.

Supporting those in need: the heart of Geauga County

In Geauga County, neighbors helping neighbors is more than just a saying—it’s a way of life. This spirit of community is exemplified by the donors who generously support United Way of Geauga County. Their contributions make a significant difference, ensuring that life-changing resources reach those who need them the most.

One such neighbor who has benefited from these services is Ralph.

Living with a disability and managing a medical condition that requires frequent hospital visits, Ralph faces daily challenges. His fixed income and rural location add additional barriers to meeting his basic needs, including securing nutritious food and accessing essential healthcare.

However, thanks to the Geauga Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), Ralph has found the support he needs to maintain his independence and well-being.

Making a measurable impact

The Geauga Aging and Disability Resource Center’s efforts have had a tangible impact on the community. In 2024, the Geauga ADRC:

  • Provided $25,697 in utility and rent assistance to 125 individuals.
  • Delivered 577 meals to residents under 60 living with a disability.
  • Connected 232 people with support services.
  • Engaged with 592 people at food pantries.

These numbers highlight the vital role this center plays in ensuring our neighbors receive the support they need.

Bridging gaps: how the Aging and Disability Resource Center helps

The Geauga Aging and Disability Resource Center, an initiative run by United Way, plays a critical role in ensuring individuals like Ralph can access essential services.

One of the biggest obstacles Ralph faced was transportation. In rural areas like Geauga County, getting to medical appointments or grocery stores can be difficult for those without personal vehicles. The ADRC stepped in by providing transit passes and assisting Ralph in applying for reduced fares with Geauga Transit, making his travel more affordable and accessible.

Beyond transportation, the ADRC also helped Ralph with food security. By providing ALDI gift cards, the program supplemented his income, ensuring he had access to nutritious meals.

Additionally, the center assisted Ralph with a complex but crucial transition from Medicaid to Medicare. With guidance from ADRC specialists, Ralph was able to choose a healthcare plan that met his medical and financial needs. He was also enrolled in the Extra Help Program, which significantly reduced his out-of-pocket prescription costs.

The greater impact: why the Aging and Disability Resource Center matters

The importance of the Geauga Aging and Disability Resource Center extends beyond individual assistance—it also benefits the larger community.

By providing access to essential services, the ADRC helps seniors and individuals with disabilities live independently, reducing the need for institutional care and easing the burden on healthcare and social services.

Moreover, the ADRC strengthens community well-being by helping individuals manage their healthcare and financial needs, reduce medical debt, and improve quality of life. When people like Ralph can access reliable transportation, nutritious food, and affordable healthcare, they can remain active members of the community.

United Way of Geauga County and its Aging and Disability Resource Center exemplify the power of community-driven support. Their work not only changes individual lives but also fosters a healthier, more connected society.
